Pensando Junto - Thinking Together
With more than 200,000 inhabitants, Rocinha is Latin America’s largest favela. Rocinha’s poverty remains a stark contrast to the wealth witnessed in Rio de Janeiro, representing a financial dichotomy all too familiar to Rio and greater Brazil. Despite the fact that it is more developed than other favelas, Rocinha still faces serious problems with drug trafficking and the violence it genereates as well as the marginalization of its population from mainstream society.
Pensando Junto
was created in June 2003 by Gabriel O Pensador, a Brazilian social activist and rap music pioneer. His music has been an inspiration to underprivileged communities, lending a voice to their inhabitants by making people aware of the problems within Brazilian society. Gabriel has always lived near Rocinha. He has spent a significant amount of time getting to know the kids who spend their days skipping school and lingering at the stoplight marking the mouth of the favela inventing new ways to make ends meet. During these conversations, Gabriel devised ways in which he could help those kids and the Rocinha community. Dreams Can Be strongly supports Pensando Junto by appealing with individual sponsors for children and young adults identified as at risk or in particular need.
