Freedom in the streets and threats at home
A child tells the story of life with his stepfather

“The first time I left home I was 7. Then I came back, stayed living with my mother for some time and left again. My parents divorced when I was a baby. My father said my mother was a very hard person to live with. I agree with him. If you say something is made of wood, she says it’s a stone.

Soon after the divorce, my mother married Gilson. He was good for me, because I was walloped by my mother, but I never put my trust in him. One time, I was cooking and he came home early from work. My other brothers were also at home, but he told them to go to our grandma’s house. I wanted to go too, but he didn’t let me, saying that he was the one who gave the orders. I kept making lunch, when he started locking the doors and told me that if I ever said anything to my mom, he’d kill me and her. And he did whatever he wanted with me.”.

From a street child from SP.
