Oi Supports Digital Inclusion Project in Juazeiro do Norte
Wellington Rabello
Juazeiro do Norte
Citizenship on Wheels
The Inauguration of the “Digital Express” took place on the same day of the 164th anniversary of Padre Cícero birthday
The City of Juazeiro de Norte, in the state of Ceará, had a day of celebration on the last Monday of the month, the 24th.  Located 493 kilometers from Fortaleza, the city had two important events on the same day: the 164th birthday celebration of the city’s founder, Padre Cíero, and the inauguration of the Digital Express project, from the NGO Jutiri which is supported by Oi, through the Novos Brasis do Oi Futuro (New Brazils of the Oi Future) program, an institute for social responsibility.

The Digital Express is a program from the Instituto de Ecocidadania Juriti (Jutiri eco-citizen Institute), an NGO which began in 1998 that works through a renovated bus that is equipped with eight computers, all with internet access. The project was inaugurated in the Colina do Horto neighborhood, where the bus will stay for 15 days, followed by a visit to Salesiano, the center of Juazeiro de Norte.

In accordance with the wishes of the NGO Juriti coordinator, the sociologist Cristina Diogo, the role of the Digital Express is to inform people about the political measures for digital inclusion, showing how the citizen is able to take possession of technology in order to guarantee their rights.  “The people are hungry for culture, not just food.  Through the Digital Express, we are going to discover the principal problems that plague each neighborhood we visit, and through videoconferencing, present these problems to the authorities who are responsible for finding the solutions”, Cristina Diogo noted.

The purchases for the renovation of the bus were covered at first by an award offered by Oi Futuro, totaling 150 thousand reais.  From this money, 113 thousand reais was allocated just to equip the Digital Express.  The remaining money was used for maintenance and paying the monitors and driver.

The Digital Express will have passed through 24 neighborhoods in Juazeiro do Norte by the end of the year, working Mondays through Fridays, from 8:00 AM till 12: PM, and from 2:00 PM until 6:00 PM, with the purpose of attending to eight people every thirty minutes. To use the Digital Express, one must register himself on the project’s website at www.juriti.org/expresso, where he will have access to all the rules of use.  “First, basic computer skills will be offered followed by free internet access.  Outside the bus there will be recycling workshops, teleconferences, and film shows”, Cristina Diogo said.

The Greatest Challenge: after acquiring the dilapidated bus was to implement the renovations and make it ready for access as the Digital Express.  For this mission, the NGO Juriti invited 46 year-old José Baluduino (also known as Zé do Chassi), the owner of a car repair garage Chassi de Caminhão, from the Salesiano neighborhood, to work on this project.
Zé do Chassi considered the mission that he received “a great challenge”, since he would have to adapt two vehicles, making them into one: an American GM auto-shell from Chassi, and the workings of a Brazilian Mercedes-Benz.  He found difficulty in the fact that the two cars were completely different, and they still required a good amount of service, but affirmed that he would be extremely happy after its completion, recognizing all of the benefits that the project will offers.

The restoration of the bus took four and a half months, beginning in November of 2007.  According to Zé, the service was intense and required work on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays– he even worked all Christmas day.  He received assistance from three workers from his garage.

“During these four months, we tried to consolidate the garage services with the refurbishing of the Digital Express, but a lot of our other jobs ended up running late because our priority laid in the bus”, Zé do Chassi affirmed, saying that the value of his work was not at all closed, since the purpose of the project is geared towards taking children out of marginalization.

The manager of corporate relations of Oi, Urbano Costa, participated in the inauguration of the Digital Express and said that the project brings together two areas of Oi Futuro, which are education and culture, for the promotion of development.  He noted that every year there is an opening for the selection of an NGO that participates in education, technology, and information, which will be sponsored for a year and will receive, in addition to money, guidance in the area of administration.

Oi supports projects in the 16 states to which it provides its telephone service.  Urbano Costa said that it has been a long time since the state of Maranhão has had projects sponsored, mainly because it did not possess a state law for cultural incentive, thus loosing many projects to its neighbor Piauí which has had, throughout the years, one or two projects approved.

The NGO Juriti: The Institute for Eco-citizenship of Juriti (ONG Juriti) was created in Juazeiro do Norte in 1998, with its headquarters located in the neighborhood of Leando Bezerra.  The idea, according to Cristina Diogo, came about through the environmental impacts provoked by the flock of pilgrims that fill the city each year for a religious festival.  “A lot of trash accumulated on the streets, the sewer system flooded, and the telephone lines became congested with the excessive use by the pilgrims”, she stated.

The first step in the creation of the NGO occurred when Cristina won the Betinho de Cidadania award for her thesis.  With this resource she opened up a small office which gave way to more activities, having the central theme of separating trash according to material for recycling.  Right away, the Circo Escola de Ecocidadania (the school for eco-citizenship on wheels) was created, which had as its mission to pass through neighborhood upon neighborhood, showing people their presentations for them to realize the importance of separating trash according to its material in order to recycle.

In its ten years of existence, Juriti has already created an association of garbage collectors, trained 20 educators in the field, and has already brought its programs to other cities in Ceará.  The next step is the organization of the Patativa do Assaré show,
which instructs on taking care of semi-arid land, serving to preserve the environment and culture while rescuing the history of Patativa do Assaré.  The show will use ten people between 14 and 22 years old.
Digital Express passes through 24 neighborhoods in Juazeiro do Norte, bringing digital inclusion.  The small picture shows the coordinator, Cristina Diogo.

Zé do Chassi transformed a n empty auto-shell into a medium of inclusion.
José Iran, a member of Circus School, sees the Digital Express as helping him achieve his dreams.
During the inauguration of the Digital Express, there was a presentation by a group of teens that are a part of the Circo Escola de Ecocidadania.  Among them was José Iran Brigido Pinheiro, 18 years old, who saw the Digital Express as the realization of a dream and as a way of rescuing values, showing children that they are not alone.  “Some children think that it’s difficult to get to Juriti and the Digital Express makes this easier, because it goes directly to them”, José Iran commented.

He believes that the workshops, principally “meta-recycling”, a technique that transforms old computers into a new machines to be donated to communities, will increase the participation of those in the project, because they will see where the gift comes from and take care of it.

José Iran entered into Circus school when he was 14 and today he is a social teacher for that institution.  Before, he worked selling coconut juice at traffic lights, which he did for three years, taking away from the time that he could have been in school.  “My live has been transformed.  Before I just thought about getting money, now I think about changing lives”, he declared.
Urgo helping Brazilian kids with dreams
Thursday, April 03, 2008
By Mike Kezdi
The Sun Courier
While traveling across the globe working in the music industry, former Brecksville resident Lisa Marie Urgo, formerly Lisa Mulready, said she fell in love with Brazil and its people.

However in those travels she also realized that the Brazil she fell in love with and envisioned through its music was not all that it was cracked up to be. Urgo saw the street children and was always affected by them, she said.

So, when she retired from the fast-paced music industry in 2000, she moved to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to help those children. Urgo founded the Dreams Can Be Foundation to help the street children.  "These kids don't get a chance to think about their dreams," Urgo said. "We help give hope where there was none and help these kids to believe in their dreams."  Because of her work with Dreams Can Be, Urgo received the annual Ralph Greenberg Award from The American Society of Rio de Janeiro.  "I was surprised," Urgo said about finding out she received the award. "We kind of keep a low profile."  "I was really, really pleased because it means they (the society) really looked at our work," she added.  Since the creation of Dreams Can Be, the foundation has worked in the favelas (slums) working with small grass roots programs that help children. These are programs that often get passed over by larger charitable organizations

With help of a small staff and friends both stateside and in Rio, the foundation has donated roughly $250,000 to the community.

Urgo, a 1978 graduate of Brecksville High School, said her parents Thomas and the late Alice Mulready were always involved in the community and it's no surprise that she would do the same.
"The biggest thing I learned was the value of community," Urgo said of her time in Brecksville. "It's not an accident that we're doing things in community service."

The we she is referring to is that of her brother Thomas Mulready founder of Cool Cleveland, Created in response to the familiar refrain, "There's nothing to do in this town..." Cool Cleveland which highlights political and cultural current events of the week.

During the interview, Urgo also wanted to thank the residents in the Brecksville area who donated close to $10,000 to Dreams Can Be last year after her mother's death. With that money, Urgo was able to get a matching funds to create the Alice Mulready Memorial Scholarship fund to help young women in Rio attend medical school.
"It's exciting, it's something that will live forever," Urgo said.

Cirque du Soleil cast a spell on children of Curitiba
Thirty children sheltered in units of the Foundation of Social Action (FAS) attended the dress rehearsal of Cirque du Soleil’s performance of Alegría on Thursday, September 13, 2007. This was the first presentation ever of Cirque du Soleil in Curitiba and the opening night was set for the next day. The invitations had been donated to the president of FAS, Fernanda Richa (the wife of the mayor of Curitiba), by Dreams Can Be Foundation and Dreams partner Cristina Mateus, owner of the stores Triton, Mixed and Fórum in Curitiba. Fernanda chose to invite the 22 girls of the shelter Casa das Meninas Novo Mundo (House of the Girls New World) and the eight girls from República de Meninas Nova Esperança (New Republic of Girls Hope). "This is a very unique opportunity for these girls", said Fernanda Richa.

Dreams Can Be Partners Cris Mateus and brother Deni Mateus
with 30 girls from projects in Curitiba attend the dress rehearsal
of Cirque Du Soleil’s ‘Alegría’ in Curitiba on September 13th,
with tickets donated by Dreams Can Be Foundation through
their ongoing partnership with Cirque du Soleil and CIE Brasil.
The children were enchanted by the show. "I did not sleep. I had a colorful dream twirling around in my head", said K.C.A, 12 years, who has spent five years in the shelter— "It is the prettiest place that I have ever been in my life. If could only stay there… ", said the girl-”All I could think about all day was the circus." T.S.L.L. 12 years old, did not know how to explain what she had seen. "It was all so fast, it seemed the time flew by, but the memory of it is huge, even though it was only two hours long. It was beautiful." Adolescent I.B.C.16 years old, was so joyful. "I told everyone at school that I was going and no one believed me. But I went to the circus and I saw everything. My dream now is to be a tumbler and to study for this. One day I will join the circus "she said. The dress rehearsal was the first presentation of Cirque du Soleil in Curitiba, attended only by special guests and the press. Cristina Mateus, who accompanied the girls to the inaugural session, said that the look in the eyes of the children, the vivid color of the spectacular, was the best gift that I could receive in my life. "Nothing is worth more than the emotion that I felt when seeing these girls hypnotized by the show.” said Cristina.
Plaque - On Friday night (Sept. 14th), Ma  yor Beto Richa presented a plaque of homage to the general director of Cirque du Soleil, Jose Ramon Corraliza Gómez. The plaque was in gratitude of the city of Curitibato the circus for having included Curitibain its tour in Brazil.  "The coming of the Cirque du Soleil confirms the importance of Curitibain the calendar of great international events, besides bringing this wonderful spectacular to the Curitibano public", said Richa. “It was also an important contribution to the economic sector, with employment and tourist movement in the city." The presentation of the plaque was made at club Taboo during the opening night party.
