WHAT MAKES US DIFFERENT

There is no other U.S. based non-profit organization with dedicated offices in both the US and Brazil while also having the specific purpose of helping street children, at-risk and abandoned youth in Brazil.

WE ARE U.S. BASED

We are an American non-profit organization. We have to uphold and abide by the strict IRS rules and regulations of a U.S. based non-profit with 501 c 3 status.

Dreams Can Be Foundation is a US 501c3 non-profit charitable supporting organization. We report to the IRS (US Internal Revenue Service) on an annual basis an entire accounting for our work. We also contract with an outside auditing agency to ensure the integrity of our accounting for the public— (Annual Report 2005 - 1,1 Mb)   Something that is not required but that we feel is necessary in order to assure all potential donors that their money is being used for the purposes described and not diverted in any way whatsoever. In order to maintain our 501c3 status it is imperative that we uphold and abide by the strict IRS accounting rules. This 501c3 status allows Americans to receive a tax deduction for their charitable donation.

Our experience with US accounting principals gives us the ability to strengthen NGOs by raising their professional standards and increasing their institutional transparency and accountability.

WE ARE BRAZILIAN BASED

Dreams Can Be Foundation is also a Brazilian NGO - OSCIP ( Organização da Sociedade Civil de Interesse Público/ A Civil Association of Public Interest)

An OSCIP is a not-for-profit private legal entity that performs public interest activities. In order to qualify as an OSCIP, the entitys bylaws must expressly establish the observance of the principles of legality, impersonality, morality, publicity, economics, and efficiency. The specificity required by law for organizations designated as OSCIPs is far greater than for any other form of certification in Brazil. These are requirements that ensure that the entity's public objectives are effectively in the publics interest and that the entity will act professionally to manage its activities, and will keep its internal accounts well-organized and available to the public.

WE ARE INTERNATIONAL

We have an international advisory committee with varying backgrounds and specialties all of whom are volunteers who have nothing personal to gain by such involvement with us but to help those children less fortunate than our own.

We work in partnership with grassroots organizations and community-based groups with an institutional development strategy that combines international experience, best practices, innovative approaches and financial resources with local demand and talent.

WE ARE INDEPENDENT

We are completely independent of any political or government organization or party. We have no debts to pay or favors to repay so we can choose the projects we support based strictly on our independent assessments.

EXPOUNDING ON OUR MISSION

Expounding on our Mission Statement- Dreams Can Be Foundation (DCBF) supports programs, projects and NGO’s both small and large that work directly with children in the most-needy urban communities in Brazil. We work in partnership with grassroots organizations and community-based groups to improve processes, to promote and facilitate collaboration with peers to effect systemic change, and to promote stability within their individual organizations. We have a well-defined criterion of benchmarks that we use to screen and evaluate programs leading to greater overall outcomes. With clear objectives that depend on the individual organizational needs, we work directly with these groups toward a goal of greater efficiency, transparency and over all self-sustainability. Accordingly, we also write grant proposals to American and Brazilian funders and assist larger programs with better resources in the understanding of this process. We work with programs offering street children and impoverished youth activities that educate and teach discipline as well as provide opportunities for peer-interaction, increased self-awareness, the cultivation of self-esteem and exposure to life skills, which will aid them in becoming responsible and happy citizens. We are committed to creating change in the area of individual philanthropy in Brazil. Through this commitment we aim to raise awareness of the value and abilities of children from low-income communities and remove existing barriers in order to offer them access to better education, more life opportunities and improved advocacy on their behalf.
