Trupe Tralha

Trupe Tralha was founded in 1993 at a circus workshop in the city of Araçuai, Minas Gerais. A group of artists, educators and volunteers discovered in the Circus a recipe for social work with at-risk youth. For the past ten years, Trupe & Tralha has been researching the popular circus art, street theatre and the multiple expressions of social cultural forms. Today, the group motivates, promotes and executes social actions to turn individuals, especially kids, into participative, constructive and critically thinking citizens.

The performance group from Trupe Trahla makes regular appearances all over Brazil and performs regularly outside of Brazil as well.

In partnership with the childcare center Tia Lita- Trupe Tralha is currently concentrating on a project called O Picadeiro do Caldeirão. This project is taking place in the community of Palmital A, an area characterized by societal scorn and disregard, also known as Caldeirão do Inferno, Hells Caldron. Palmital is famous for its marginality and violence, and Trupe Tralha wants to change that.

The general objective of the project is the establishment of the circus/theatre workshop for adolescents who are attended in the region of Palmital. The workshop will take place at Creche Tia Lita and attends 120 adolescents from the Creche transforming them into social circus monitors/educators and draw basic permanent standard workshop of Social Circus. The second phase will be to realize the creation of a social circus school, totally equipped to attend the community; thus assuring the longevity of the project and guaranteeing a space for additional program participants from the Edvard Lima School who also need attending, thereby doubling the size of the project.

Trupe Tralha strongly believes in the circus characteristics to facilitate and form socio-educative social integration. The creativity, game, risk and enchantment offered by the circus, “the circus magic”, attracts youth and encourages them to activate personal and collective changes. Circus activities also naturally activate different values and attitudes like: team work, persistence, trust in self and in others, self-esteem, and the possibility to develop several other disciplines like physics, math, history, music, body movement, etc. thereby enabling the kids to work on not only circus techniques, but scientific and artistic expression. The circus promotes the pleasure of learning.
